NICKO MCBRAIN, DEREK RODDY Take Part In THE BIG BEAT Drum Event
November 10, 2008According to the Miami Herald, Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) and Derek Roddy (HATE ETERNAL, NILE, TODAY IS THE DAY) are among the "celebrity" drummers who took part in The Big Beat, a event held at nine North American locations on November 2 which aimed to set a Guinness world record and raise money for public school music programs.
The record is not confirmed by Guinness yet but likely will stand at nearly 3,000 for the largest number of drummers on full sets to play together at one time.
Drummers, under the networking umbrella of Five-Star Drum Shops drum association, pooled efforts in Hollywood, Fla.; Depew, N.Y.; Columbus and Willowick, Ohio; Kirkland, Wash.; Tulsa, Okla.; Memphis; Houston; and Toronto.
People of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels pounded Bang the Drum Quickly for 15 minutes.
Jeffrey Lee, owner of Resurrection Drums in Hollywood (which hosted the Florida event),said the idea was born at Woodstick, an annual drum festival staged by Donn Bennett Drum Studio near Seattle. Last year, 533 Woodstick drummers broke a record for drum sets played at one location.
